Moissanite is named after the doctor that discovered it in a meteorite in the early 1900's. Moissanite does not occur naturally on earth and the fragments in the meteorite were too small for jewelry use.

Scientists were able to grow Moissanite in the late 1990s in gem size and quality. It is highly refractive, ranks a 9.25 on the Moh's hardness scale, and is available in many standard gemstone cuts.

Lab-grown moissanite should cost $300 - $500 per carat.

If you're at all inclined to make a moissanite engagement ring, I highly recommend it. It is as much fun to make a ring out of moissanite as diamond, at a lower cost in every way.
